The first commercial flight from
the U.S. could arrive today

Aeris Holding Costa Rica, the company in charge of managing the Juan Santamarνa International Airport (SJO), in Alajuela Province, informs on its website that the first commercial flight from the United States could arrive today.

According to the information provided on its website, a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey, USA, is scheduled to arrive at 10:30 a.m. today to the SJO.

However, the United Airlines website shows that there are no flights scheduled from the U.S. to Costa Rica today.   The airlines website, shows flights from the U.S. scheduled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week.


It is expected that Aeris could confirm or rule out the flight's arrival today.

According to the Aeris's international flight report, updated on Aug. 31, the handful of airlines that have announced the reopening of flights are as follows:

• Air Canada will resume operations beginning October 3, to and from Toronto.

• West Jet offers a repatriation flight to Canada on September 4.

• Air France will resume operations on October 14, to and from Paris.

• Avianca will resume operations on September 2, to and from El Salvador.

• British Airways will resume operations on October 27.

• Copa Airlines will continue to schedule rescue flights to Panama on September 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25.

• Edelweiss Air will resume operations on October 15 to Zurich.

• Iberia Airlines resumed operations as of August 3 from Madrid.

• Lufthansa resumed operations as of August 5 from Frankfurt.

• Southwest Airlines will resume operations in 2021.

• United Airlines is expected to resume operations on September 3 from Newark. And it is offering repatriation flights on Thursdays in September, to and from Houston.

According to Aeris, the updates of commercial flights to and from the country will depend on the information provided by each airline. The SJO website will be updating information when details are shared.

Costa Rica maintains open-air borders with countries of the European Union (Schengen zone), United Kingdom, Japan; South Korea; Thailand; Singapore and the People's Republic of China, Oceania, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Uruguay, and certain states from the United States.

The Schengen Area, named after the 1985 Schengen Agreement signed in Schengen, Luxembourg, is an area comprising 26 European countries that have officially abolished all passports and all other types of border control at their mutual borders.

The 26 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia , Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

In the case of the United States, only people living in 12 of the 50 states are allowed to enter the country beginning on the following dates:

• As of today, residents of Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Virginia and Washington D.C. will be able to travel into Costa Rica.

• As of Sept. 15, residents of Colorado, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania will be able to enter.

All foreign-born people who enter the country by air with a tourist visa must meet the following requirements:

• Fill out the electronic epidemiological online at the following link to the online Health Pass, form.

• RT-PCR diagnostic test with a negative result; the sample must have been taken within 72 hours of travel to Costa Rica.

• Traveler's Medical Insurance can be purchased in their country of origin or Costa Rica through the Government Insurance Institute or approved private insurance companies located in Costa Rica.

• Passengers coming from the U.S.A. must show through their driver’s license or state identification (State ID) that they live in one of the 12 authorized states. This requirement excludes children traveling with their families.

According to the government, the list of countries or states that are allowed to enter tourism is constantly updated, so it is expected that in the coming days there will be a new region authorized to reopen commercial flights in the country.
