The government announced that in May 2020, the country will host the ECLAC 2020, meeting of representatives of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean

According to the government, ECLAC 2020 will be a forum where policies focused on the sustainable development of member countries will be studied.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, known as ECLAC, was founded in 1948. It is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations and its headquarters are in Santiago, Chile.

"It is estimated that around 400 people will participate, and there will be representation from at least 33 ECLAC member countries, extra-regional partners from Asia and Europe," said the government in its statement.

The country will hold the presidency of the organization for one year in 2020.

President Carlos Alvarado met Monday with Alicia Bárcena, executive secretary of ECLAC, where topics such as the organization's support for projects related to the Afro-descendant population promoted by Vice President Epsy Campbell were discussed.

Also, other topics were climate change, agriculture and migration in the region, among others, said the government.

According to Bárcena, it is important and urgent that Latin America shifts towards a new development paradigm that allows the preservation of economic, social and environmental conditions for future generations as the only solution to address the global challenges.

"Within the new paradigm, renewable energy, electro-mobility and the restoration of ecosystems and the services they provide are key to the strategy of a great environmental boost in the region," said Bárcena in her statement.

According to Bárcena this paradigm shift, from a carbon-intensive one to one with greater sustainability, as an opportunity to generate investment and growth and trigger innovation based on the characteristics of the region.

"The search for a path of growth and low carbon development is essential for all the world's economies," said Bárcena. "There is a fundamental international asymmetry between emissions and vulnerability."

According to ECLAC, total emissions from Latin America and the Caribbean represent only 8.3 percent of global emissions, but at the same time, the region is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to its geographical, climatic, socioeconomic and demographic.
