Published Friday, December 18, 2020 The country produces 98% of
renewable electricity, says report By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The National Electric System has produced 98% of renewable electricity generation for six continuous years, according to the report from Electricity Institute. The National Electric System is made up of public and private companies that produce electricity. Among the public companies are the Electricity Institute, ICE, The National Company of Electricity, CNFL, Coneléctricas cooperative and the Administrative Board of the Municipal Electric Service of Cartago, JASEC. The largest private companies producing electricity are El General, Plantar and La Joya. According to the report, the results this year also showed the impact of the pandemic caused by covid-19, due to a 3% electricity consumption decrease. This year the production of electric energy was almost covered by five clean sources reaching 99.78%. Energy from fuels has been the lowest since 1986; this year it was only 23.73 gigawatt-hours, the institute said. According to the report, this year, the water used in plants and reservoirs continues as the main source within the electricity matrix, with 71.95%. The three largest hydroelectric generation plants are located in Arenal Canton in Guanacaste, the cantons of Cachí and Angostura in Cartago Province, and Pirrís Canton in San José. The second most important source is geothermal, with 14.90%, followed. This electricity is produced mainly from the Miravalles and Las Pailas plants in Guanacaste. The third source is wind power equivalent at 12.39%. The energy produced comes from plants located in the mountainous ridges of Guanacaste Province and the Los Santos in the southern zone of San José Province. -------------------------- Should the electricity rates be reduced due to the generation of energy with renewable resources?
