The largest liner in the port's history arrives Saturday in Limón. The ship is the Norwegian Joy with  3,883 passengers and 1,700 crew members, said the Board of Port Administration, known as JAPDEVA.

According to Norwegian Cruise Line, the Norwegian Joy is 167,725 gross tons and 333.46 meters long.

The cruise ship arrived at 7 a.m. from Colón, Panamá. There was a nine-hour layover at the Port of Limón until departure to Roatán, Honduras, at 4 p.m., said the Tourism Institute.

Also Saturday the Island Princess docked and remained in port until 6 p.m. when she sailed to Grand Cayman Island, the institute reported. The ship has a capacity of 2,200 passengers.

According to the institute, 85 artisans, six tourist companies and more than 200 tourist transport vehicles received the hundreds of tourists who decided to disembark and get to know the Caribbean coast.

"They will tour the province knowing their natural beauties, enjoying local food and contributing to the economic revival of Limón," said the institute in its statement in advance of the visit. "The best selling tour is the one that goes to the Tortuguero canals."

According to Andrea Centeno, president of JAPDEVA, the promotion of the port for cruise ships will be one of the main activities in the new business vision of the institution.

"As of today and thanks to the facilities we have, we have been able to be the gateway to Limón of almost 200,000 cruise passengers per year," said Centeno.

These two cruise liners, Norwegian Joys and the Island Princess are the seventh and eighth to arrive in the the country during the 2019-2020 season.

According to the institute, for the current season, which began in September and will last for up to six months, Limón is expected to receive 112 ships, 224,000 passengers and more than 90,000 crew members.

According to the 2018 Economic Impact Study by the research firm  BREA, made for the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, in the category of excursions sold on-board the cruise ship, of the 36 destinations, Costa Rica is positioned as the first in sales
