The U.S. will support a study on
the immune response to covid-19
in Costa Rica

Specialists from Costa Rican and foreign organizations will develop the study to evaluate the immune response of antibodies against the infection caused by covid-19, Social Security announced.

The study will be developed with specialists from the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIAID, of the Cancer Institute of Germany, the INCIENSA Foundation, the Ministry of Health, Social Security and Agency for Biomedical Research.

The NIAID is one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, HHS. NIAID's mission is to conduct basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and prevent infectious, immunologic and allergic diseases.

The investigation will involve monitoring 3,000 people, of these 1,000 were diagnosed with covid-19 and 2,000 who have not experienced the disease yet.

This research aims to find if the body is capable of creating immunity to the virus and what are the factors that determine that response. To do this, participants will have a blood and saliva sample taken periodically over the next two years.

"The coronavirus that produces the covid-19 disease is a relatively new virus, about which very little is known, therefore, it is necessary to carry out this type of research, aimed at finding possible ways to mitigate its progress," Rolando Herrero - Acosta, director of the Biomedical Research Agency said. "This is how we seek to know how the defenses or antibodies act to fight this virus, we want to know how strong they are, if they increase or decrease over time, and most importantly if they protect people from being infected again.”

The identification of immune people would allow reducing the measures imposed by the government to avoid the increase in infections by covid-19.

The Ministry of Health reported on Saturday the following updated statistics of the covid-19 contagion in the country:

1,262 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 39,769 active cases.

16,632 foreign-born people have been infected with a total of 103,0881 cases since March, approximately 16% of the total cases. Of these, authorities confirmed the death of 32 foreign-born patients.

• 504 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 201 patients are in ICU’s in delicate health conditions (ages range from a 1-year-old to a 93-year-old). And 303 patients are in recovery rooms. Many of the remaining infected patients are quarantined in their homes.

• 62,037 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 60% recovery rate of the total cases since March.

1,282 deaths of people infected with covid-19, approximately 1.2% death rate of the total cases since March. Of these 486 women and 796 men. The ages range from a 9-year-old to a 100-year-old person.

Since Friday, Oct. 16, authorities stopped providing the updated statistics on people who have been ruled out and the number of medical covid-19 tests that have been made.

Readers can see the updated number of total patients in each district at the National Distance Education University on its Covid-19 Map.

As of Sunday night, the pandemic has killed 1,152,770 people at the global level, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering, CSSE, at Johns Hopkins University.
