The
Government presents three projects to the
Legislative Assembly to cap luxury pensions
By the
A.M. Costa Rica staff
President Carlos Alvarado issued Executive Decree No.41870-MP to call for extraordinary sessions to the deputies at the Legislative Assembly. This call has the goal of analyzing three bills related to limiting amounts to luxury pensions. The projects presented on Monday for analysis at the Legislative Assembly are: - The bill to reduce the maximum top to luxury pensions, Nº21130. - The bill to create the legal figure of mandatory retirement, Nº21035. - The bill to improve the pension system, Nº21345. According to the Government, since 2014, deputies approved several bills to control the amounts of luxury pensions. Among the projects that have been approved are: - The tax for pensions over $4,401 per month. - The cancelation of the rule of an automatic increase of 30 percent per year for the pensions of former deputies. - The cancelation of the rule of pension inheritances of former deputies. - The age of pension in some high positions of the government was increased. In October 2018, President Alvarado was in a court hearing, with the finance and labor ministers, where they explained the approval of the law to limit luxury pensions. "The sole purpose of this appearance is to advocate for the end of luxury pensions in Costa Rica, with the support of legal, financial, technical, and ethical reasons, seeking equitable, sustainable and solidarity in pension structures," President Alvarado said before the court. ------------------------ Should the government and deputies create a law with a single pension amount for public employees?
