Temporary extensions
for driver's
licenses and vehicle review renewals
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Procedures related to driver's licenses or vehicle
inspections have been reinstated and extended,
confirmed authorities on Tuesday.
However, only the person who must complete the
procedure may enter the facilities of the Directorate
of Transit or RITEVE stations with a pre-set
appointment. No walk-ins accepted.
In the case of the renewal of driver's license
procedures, obtaining a new license, requesting a
temporary driving license, requesting certification,
or requesting the approval of your foreign license,
these procedures must be done with the General
Directorate of Transit facilities. Appointments are
mandatory and can only be scheduled from the
institution’s website.
Authorities advise scheduling the appointment on a day
where there is no driving restriction to corresponding
license plate number.
If there are no free spaces in the agenda and the
appointment cannot be scheduled, the Ministry of
Transportation authorized a grace period that
automatically extends the expiration date of any type
of license.
The extensions are established as follows:
• Licenses that
have expired in March, the renewal period
automatically extends until July.
• Licenses that
have expired in April will continue to be valid until
August.
• Licenses expired
in May will have a grace period until September
• Licenses expiring
in June and July, are extended until October.
• Licenses in
expiring August and September will continue to be
valid until November.
• Licenses expiring
in October and November, will continue to be valid
until December.
• Licenses expiring
in December will continue to be valid until January
2021.
More information on document renewals can be requested
by calling 506 2523-3300.
Regarding the technical vehicle inspection that must
be carried out in the RITEVE garages facilities,
drivers who must have their car checked in May and
June will have an extra month extension. In other
words, the RITEVE test approved proof of document will
be valid for one more month.
However, this grace period only applies to vehicles
that must undergo the technical revision in May or
June. Vehicles that had their technical revision
document expired before May, must bring their car for
revision as soon as possible because this benefit does
not apply in those cases.
RITEVE appointments can be requested by calling
905-788-0000. More information on the grace period can
be requested by calling 800-788-0000.
