Social Security built two new community clinics in the indigenous zone of Talamanca Canton, Limón Province. The idea is to better serve and provide basic medical services to the residents of the Piedra Mesa and Bajo Blei communities.

According to Social Security, approximately $4,768,108 and six years were invested to the construction of these clinics.

They were built on land loaned by the Cabécar Indigenous Reserve Association. Both medical establishments have two floors. On the first floor, health services such as general medicine, dentistry, vaccination and nebulization services are provided. The second floor has the rooms for the health workers who must stay overnight due to the long distance from the city.

The clinics were built following the traditions of the indigenous peoples including a shelter for the exclusive use of the patients. They must travel for six hours from their homes crossing through mountains to arrive to receive medical attention. For this reason, some patients must stay in the shelter during their recovery or spend the night to return home the next day.

Following the country’s sustainability efforts, the clinics have 140 photovoltaic solar panels to supply the energy necessary for the use of medical equipment and a water purification system.

In addition, a hanging bridge was built in the indigenous town of Tsoker over the Telire River to make the clinica more accessible.

The first team of health specialists must travel by helicopter to provide medical services in both clinics, where they made 200 dental appointments, 130 pediatric appointments and 140 family medicine appointments, according to Social Security.

A video of the two new clinics released by Social Security can be seen on the AM Costas Rica YouTube channel.
