By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
During a highway control operation, police officers arrested a man surnamed Ruiz on Tuesday, on suspicion of transporting more than 9 kilos of marijuana hidden in his car.
According to the police report, the arrest took place in Cutris District, in San Carlos Canton, in the northern zone of the country, near the border with Nicaragua.
The man was traveling in a Hyundai Santa Fe, small SUV-style vehicle, on Route 35 when he was intercepted by police. During a routine inspection, officers detected a strong smell of marijuana, according to the report.

When ordered to open the car trunk, the officers observed that Ruiz was carrying two black plastic bags. When the driver opened one of the bags, officers saw the packages carrying the substance.
In a more detailed inspection by the agents of the Judicial Investigation Organization of the San Carlos station, they found 9.3 kilos of chopped marijuana.
The suspect was taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where he must wait until a judge orders the pre-trial measures against him for carrying the drug.
The judicial agents ask for people to report any suspicion of drug sales or transportation to the confidential line 00-8000-645, where bilingual agents can answer calls in English or Spanish.
