The Spanish Fund for Cooperation, Water and Sanitation for Latin America and the Caribbean (FECASALC) donated $5,390,433 to finance the pipeline network improvements in the cantons of Chiles and Pocosol in the Alajuela Province, northern zone of the country.

The fund was created in 2009 by Spain to provide donations for access to drinking water in Latin America. The donation to Costa Rica was administered by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

"The Spanish Cooperation is committed to water sanitation from a Human Rights perspective," Cristina Pérez-Gutiérrez, Ambassador of Spain said.

According to the Water Institute (AyA), the improved pipeline system allows 2,844 people to be supplied with drinking water.

In Los Chiles Canton the improvements included the construction of a 260,000-liter water storage tank, the installation of 17 kilometers of pipelines, the equipment to carry out the chlorination process, among others.

While in Pocosol Canton the improvements included a storage tank for 400,000 liters of water and the installation of more than 60 kilometers of pipelines.

Improvements on drinking water services were also developed recently in Sarapiquí Canton, Heredia Province with the installation of a pipeline valued at more than $430,000.
