Social Security invests $120 million
for a new ICU children's hospital

Social Security announced on Wednesday, the plan to build a new building for the care of children in Intensive Care Unit, which has been budgeted at $120,000,000.

Despite the millions in expenses that social security has been making in response to the pandemic, this new nine-figure budget includes the construction, equipment and technical services in architecture and engineering of the building that will be called "Hope Tower."

The capital comes from the Social Development and Family Allowances Fund and will be administered through a trust where the Association of National Children’s Hospital appears as trustee (which transfers the money), the National Bank of Costa Rica as trustee (will receive the money and control compliance with the project) and finally Social Security as beneficiary.

The term of the contract is for thirty years, Social Security said.

According to the first lady Claudia Dobles, two years ago the work began from her office to promote this project. "Today we can announce that we already have the master plan for the Hope Tower and we are working hard to make the major possible progress during this government."

The new building will be located in an 8,770 square meter area near the National Children's Hospital in San José Province.

Currently, the land acquisition process is being carried out, which is made through a transfer of approximately $16,743,830 from the funds of the National Children's Trust to Social Security.

Hope Tower is planned to have 11 floors, plus three basements and a helipad. They will be providing medical services such as intensive care, X-rays, ultrasounds, blood bank, laboratory, administrative areas among others.

On Wednesday, the Social Security announced use of Intensive Care Units, ICU's, available in private hospitals to expand the capacity of attention to covid-19 patients.

Should Social Security authorities use that millionaire fund to enable more Intensive Care Units for covid-19 patients?
