says the government By the

It is better to stay at home and avoid crowds. Government recommends purchasing supplies and groceries from small community stores, as long as hygiene guidelines are applied, to better reduce the risk of transmission of covid-19, advised the Ministry of Economy on Thursday. The Ministry, along with other institutions and private companies are launching the campaign entitled "Pequeños Gigantes", or Small Giants in the English language, to promote local community shops. According to the ministry, the campaign goals are for consumers to buy their home supplies in the small shops in their communities, also known as pulperías or mini-supers, to improve local commerce. “The discipline and adaptability of people who own small grocery stores, who through the ¨Pequeños Gigantes¨ program, are an example of new business practices to help preserve public health and the work of thousands of people from their communities," said Victoria Hernández, Minister of Economy. According to the ministry, the following are reasons to shop at these small community shops: • Financial support. By buying in a small shop you are also supporting the entrepreneurs. • Proximity. Usually, these shops are near your house, helping to avoid long distances and less risk of contagion. • Community support. Buying locally keeps the community supplied with products. • Safe. Entrepreneurs have adopted hygiene and safety measures to protect their workers and their clients. • Credit availability. Pulperías are a place where business owners trust their customers. • Accessibility. There are pulperías, grocery shops, or mini-supermarkets in every neighborhood. • Home deliveries. Some of these small shops offer a home delivery service. • Smaller. The size and cleanliness reduces the risk of contagion. In the community store there are fewer people so the risk of contagion is much lower. • Quality of service. Store owners usually know people in the community and provide excellent customer service. According to a study by the company FUNDES, focused on economic analysis, in Costa Rica the work of so-called pulperías represents almost 50% of food sales. These small shops also provide income for hundreds of families. --------------------- Do you prefer to buy your groceries in pulperías or supermarkets?
