Sea Shepherd asks for donations to help families of fishermen

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Sea Shepherd of Costa Rica is developing a campaign to provide aid to fishermen in the community of Costa de Pájaros in the Gulf of Nicoya, Puntarenas.

According to the organization, donations of groceries will be delivered to 125 families in the community.

Donations are received at the Sea Shepherd Costa Rica offices located in Sabana Sur in San José Centro.

Also Saturday volunteers of the organization will be collecting donations at the National Gym, in Sabana, starting at 7 a.m.

More information about this campaign can be reached at Sea Shepherd phone: 506-2291-4091

In September, the organization developed a similar campaign to provide aid to the Costa de Pajaros community, who could not work for three month due to the ban imposed by the Fishing Institute.

Sea Shepherd said at the time  “fishermen at this time are even more vulnerable since they do not have fish to take to their homes to eat. We want to bring aid to Costa de Pájaros this weekend, but we have not yet gathered the ton of food that we have set as our goal. "

According to the organization, there are more than 100 families that do not have food due to the three-month ban on fishing.

In November, the Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture announced that the end of the ban on fishing in the Gulf of Nicoya

According to the institute, the ban covered the months of August, September, and October, so as of November the local fishermen were able to resume their activities as usual.

"The ban is established by scientific data for the regeneration of marine resources," said the institute.

According to the institute, the prohibition of fishing is the way in which the government protects and conserves the diversity of species and guides the rational use of marine natural resources.

The government, through the Institute of Social Assistance announced the delivery of about $1 million in aid to 1,467 fishermen during the period of prohibition.

The subsidy has the goal of "a complementary way to support the basic needs of fishermen during the banning period," said the institute in its statement.

According to the institute, the subsidy is an aid to prevent the fishermen and their families from reaching poverty, due to not being able to continue with their activity for three months.

The subsidy was given only to the fishermen that met the requirements of:

- Being registered with the institute and have a fishing license.

- Having medical insurance with Social Security.

- Comply with the communal work schedule.

Fishermen who did not meet the requirements did not receive any subsidies.
