The fifth and last stage of the plan to build new highways and traffic circles in San José Province is advancing to meet the estimated fulfillment in 2023, according to the Ministry of Public Works. The final stage of this project includes a 1.5 kilometers of road from route 32, between the provinces of San José and Limón, continuing to route 39 in San José, which includes an overpass highway of approximately 600 meters. The highway will continue through a tunnel until it reaches the point where a new two-level intersection will be built. The lower level tunnel will reach Route 39. The higher level is expected to have a traffic circle. In addition, the ministry also announced the progress in the construction of the new 5.4 kilometer highway between the Uruca industrial zone and Calle Blancos District. This new highway will connect three national routes: Route 1 known as Interamericana Norte, Route 27 between the provinces of San José and Puntarenas and Route 32 between the provinces of San José and Limón. According to the Ministry, the total project was budgeted at $163 million, financed with a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, CABEI. ![]() That highway will also connect with the new overpass highway, which was inaugurated in March. The company hired to develop these works is Consorcio H. Solís, the same company that was recently on the local news headlines for an alleged corruption case. ![]() In June, top suspects and owners of those companies were sent to pre-trial jail while the prosecutor's office continued investigating the $126 million of embezzled funds. However, despite the corruption case that continues to be investigated by the Public Ministry, the Office of the Comptroller General authorized the company to continue with the works for which it was hired, the ministry said. ------------------------ Should the government hold the agreements with the investigated companies until the case has been solved?
