By the A.M. Costa Rica staff From now until the end of August, a segment of the main highway in the La Uruca industrial zone, in San José Province, will be closed overnight for repairs in the area, the Ministry of Transportation warned. In a 200-meter segment of the road, access is not allowed from Route 108 (beginning at Pozuelo Cookie Factory) toward the La Uruca industrial zone. The closures will be implemented every day of the week, beginning yesterday to Sunday. The time for the closures will mirror the hours implemented for the driving restrictions from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. In the daytime, drivers can access the La Uruca zone through alternative roads. There are detour signs and traffic officers on the road to guide drivers to alternative routes. Due to the construction on the highway, the maximum speed allowed is 30 KPH. According to the ministry, the closures are necessary to allow the transport and placement of the giant columns that are part of a new tunnel currently under construction. The tunnel is the base of the three-level intersection highway which is being built in La Uruca. That new highway already has 76% progress in its construction process. In May, work began on this new tunnel and extension in the La Uruca highway. The construction is part of a bigger project known as the new North Traffic Circle in Zapote Canton. The plan is to build a tunnel with four lanes, two in each direction, as part of the tri-level highway. According to the Ministry, road construction will take approximately 6 months. Officers will be controlling traffic until construction of the four-lane project is complete. The traffic circle, known as Circunvalacion Norte is budgeted at $163 million, which is financed with a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, CABEI. This is the second highway simultaneously under construction in San José. ![]() In June work began on the expansion of the highway and the construction of a traffic circle, known as Rotonda de La Bandera in San Pedro Canton, potentially causing more traffic jams for at least the next three months. ![]() As as part of this mega-project of road improvements in March was built the new overpass highway in Guadalupe Canton in San José. ------------------------ What roads require repairs in your community?
