Remembrance and Veterans Day celebrations
By Denise Lewis
Sunday at 3 p.m., the Escazú Christian Fellowship in collaboration with several embassies will host a service to commemorate Remembrance Sunday and Veterans Day at the International Baptist Church in Guachipelín.
The service will include the ceremonial laying of wreaths, reflections on the significance of the day, readings by representatives of various embassies, and the traditional minute of silence to honor the fallen.
Remembrance Sunday, or Veterans Day, as it is known in the United States, commemorates the signing of the Armistice at the 11th our of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, signaling the end of World War I.
Today, it honors the soldiers who passed away in the line of duty and those who were affected by both world wars and more recent conflicts. In the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries, Remembrance Sunday is also known as“Poppy Day” in allusion to the famous poem,“In Flanders Fields,” written by the Canadian army officer, Lt. Col. John McCrae.
In this iconic work of literature, the poet observed the way in which the poppies bloom around the graves of fallen soldiers.
The Remembrance and Veterans Day service on Sunday will be led by Rev. Donald Ridder and will be followed by an informal get-together and light refreshments.
More information on service can be reached at British Embassy, Communications & Political Affairs Department, phone number (506) 2258–2025.
