Costa Rica staff The National Psychiatric Hospital, located in Pavas Canton, San José Province, increased its capacity to attend covid-19 patients, who are in moderate health conditions, announced Social Security. The new area specifically to attend covid-19 patients required approximately $6 million, where more than $2.1 million has been spent on equipment and $3 million on remodeling. In the hospital, 58 beds were made available with their respective equipment, in addition to the team of professionals who cared for covid-19 patients in four modules. Covid patients who are in the final phase of recovery who were referred from other public hospitals are attended at the hospital. Authorities are scheduled to add another 200 beds for covid-19 patients in the hospital depending on the evolution of the virus in the country. It is expected that in November the rest of the equipment required for covid-19 hospitalizations will be in place. As of October 23, 30 covid-19 patients have been treated at the hospital, of which 13 are currently hospitalized. Providing more beds in hospitals to care for covid-19 patients is a priority for health authorities, due to the accelerated spread of the virus in the country. The Ministry of Health reported on Monday the following updated statistics of the covid-19 contagion in the country: • 511 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 39,439 active cases. • 16,760 foreign-born people have been infected with a total of 104,460 cases since March, approximately 16% of the total cases. Of these, authorities confirmed the death of 32 foreign-born patients. • 512 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 206 patients are in ICU’s in delicate health conditions (ages range from a 1-year-old to a 93-year-old). And 306 patients are in recovery rooms. Many of the remaining infected patients are quarantined in their homes. • 63,709 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 61% recovery rate of the total cases since March. • 1,312 deaths of people infected with covid-19, approximately 1.3% death rate of the total cases since March. Of these 499 women and 813 men. The ages range from a 9-year-old to a 100-year-old person. Since Friday, Oct. 16, authorities stopped providing the updated statistics on people who have been ruled out and the number of medical covid-19 tests that have been made.
