-Published: Wednesday, October 30, 2019- Prohibition on
fishing in the Gulf of Nicoya concludes
Thursday
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture, known as INCOPESCA by its acronym in Spanish, announced that the ban on fishing in the Gulf of Nicoya on the Pacific coast will end Thursday. According to the institute, the ban covers August, September and October, so as of Friday local fishermen will be able to resume their activities as usual. "The ban is established by scientific data for the regeneration of marine resources," said the institute. According to the institute, the prohibition of fishing is the way in which the government protects and conserves the diversity of species, and guides the rational use of marine natural resources. The government, through the Institute of Social Assistance, known as IMAS, announced the delivery of about $1,063,851 in aid subsidy to 1,467 fishermen during the period of prohibition. The subsidy has the goal of "a complementary way to support the basic needs of fishermen during the banning period," said the institute in its statement. According to the institute, the subsidy is an aid to prevent the fishermen and their families from reaching poverty, due to not being able to continue with their activity for three months. The subsidy was given only to the fishermen that met the requirements of: - Be registered with the institute and have a fishing license. - Having medical insurance with social security. - Comply with the communal work schedule. Fishermen who did not meet the requirements did not receive any subsidies. Despite the aid, there was a lot of illegal fishing in the gulf and fishing crews frequently clashed with those on coast guard patrol boats that tried to enforce the ban. ![]() On Sept, as A.M. Costa Rica reported, the organization, Sea Shepherd of Costa Rica made a campaign to provide aid to artisanal fishers who cannot work due to the ban imposed by the Fishing Institute. According to Sea Shepherd, "artisanal fishermen at this time are even more vulnerable since they do not have fish to take their homes to eat. We want to bring aid to the community of Costa de Pájaros, but we have not yet gathered the ton of food that we have set as our goal. " According to the organization, there are more than 100 families that do not have food due to the three-month ban on fishing. According to the Fishing Institute, 1,192 fishermen are banned from fishing during August, September, and October. Due to this prohibition, the government has given them a subsidy of approximately $250 per month, so they can cover the expenses of their homes. However, the Institute confirmed that there are still approximately 188 fishermen that did not meet all the requirements to receive the subsidy. ----------------------------- Should the government also establish a ban on international fishing companies in the national territory?
