By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Officers of the Department of Navigation Control, began their required annual inspection and control of private vessels such as sport fishing, artisanal fishing and passenger transport among others. All boats must have their Navigation Certificate which allows the use of vessels in the country. As part of the inspection process, boat owners must have the previously approved certificate, the boat ownership certificate, legal ID, among other documents. The inspecting officers will also verify if all the safety and rescue equipment is on board, duly labeled, installed and functional. The boat must also be in good condition for navigation, have the vessel name on both sides, display the license plate and the Costa Rican flag in a visible area. The license plate number and flag should also be labeled on the roof of the boat (if applicable) to allow quick recognition from the sky, authorities said. ![]() Boat owners can request an appointment for the vessel inspection by calling the Capitania of Puerto Limón at 2795-0669. There is also the option of requesting the checkup directly to the officer on the day scheduled for visiting the port. According to the Ministry of Transportation, this week’s inspections are taking place in the ports of the Association of Lancheros del Lago Arenal. As well as at the docks of Maquenque Hotel and Boca Tapada Hotel in San Carlos River. For more information about pop-up inspections, call the Capitania line. The authorities are asking for boat owners to apply the sanitary guidelines to avoid contagion against covid-19 on the day of inspection. -------------------------- What have you heard about expats obtaining a navigation permit in Costa Rica?
