Private laboratories authorized
to apply covid-19 antibody tests
Five laboratories were authorized by the Ministry of Health to apply tests to identify antibodies against covid-19.
The private authorized laboratories Echandi Lab., Clínica Bíblica Hospital, La Católica Hospital, Cima Hospital and Labin Lab., may purchase antibody tests from the companies Abbott and Snibe Inc.
Also, the Ministry of Health approved the health records of antibody tests for two more laboratories, Roche and BioMérieux S.A.
In the country, the distributors to sell immunoglobulin tests are Equitron S.A for the Roche laboratory and Tecno Diagnóstica S.A. for the BioMérieux laboratory.
These types of tests measure the concentration of different types of antibodies in the blood, allowing to identify if a person has been previously exposed to covid-19 and therefore developed antibodies, the ministry said.
The antibody tests are authorized by the ministry to function in the following capacities:
• Biomedical research studies. For example, observational, clinical research.
• Studies of the immune response to vaccines against covid-19.
• Evaluation of the immune response of people who have recovered from covid-19, for the process of donating and receiving plasma.
• Support for the diagnosis of special medical situations where patients present late complications of covid-19. For example, the multisystemic inflammatory syndrome in children and adolescents (MISC) or Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
The ministry clarifies that these tests cannot be used for the diagnosis of the disease by covid-19 and cannot be used to authorize the entry or exit of people to the country through any of the borders.
The results of these tests should not be used in making decisions from employers to employees, contracting, re-entry, layoffs, or opening and closing of work or study, the ministry said.
In March the Ministry authorized eight private laboratories to carry out the covid-19 test: Echandi Lab., La Católica Hospital, Cima Hospital, Labin Lab., Clínica Bíblica Hospital, Páez Lab., San José Lab. and Metropolitano Hospital.
