world’s most influential people, says Time
Magazine
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Edward Felsenthal, editor-in-chief and CEO of Time magazine, has named President Carlos Alvarado one of the 100 most influential people this year. According to Felsenthal, with the current issue the TIME 100 list spotlights 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health and more. The segment on Alvarado was written by Ban Ki-moon, former secretary-general of the United Nations and the deputy chairman of the Elders, a group of global leaders advocating for peace, justice and human rights. According to Ban, Costa Rica is a small country, but its president, Carlos Alvarado-Quesada, has shown great ambition in tackling the climate crisis. “He recognizes the need to confront this existential challenge with innovative and urgent action,” said Ban. “This year, the U.N. recognized Costa Rica’s trailblazing approach and ambitious climate policies with its highest environmental honor, naming it a U.N. Champion of the Earth.” Since becoming president in 2018, Alvarado has established a bold path for Costa Rica, setting targets to reform transport, energy, waste and land use. He is building on his nation’s rich legacy of sustainable development and environmentally mindful growth, said Ban on the presentation about Alvarado. “In an age of populism, isolationism and polarized politics, President Alvarado’s defense of the multilateral system and his commitment to finding global solutions to global challenges are highly commendable,” said Ban. “His actions serve to remind the world that even small nations can take the lead.” After the publication of Time, President Alvarado said "I am honored to represent the legacy of many people who, throughout our history, we have built in this small country an enormous conviction for our environment that speaks to the world today. We will continue that heritage for the future of all who come. " President Alvarado's interview by Time can be reached at the magazine site. According to Felsenthal, the magazine listed people without an age cap. “The youngest person on this list, for example, is 14-year-old figure-skating phenom Alysa Liu, who recently became the first U.S. woman to land a quadruple lutz jump in competition, the second hardest maneuver in the sport. The oldest is Ayman Odeh, a politician who, at 44, has emerged as a potential kingmaker in Israeli politics. Alvarado announced Wednesday that he would travel that very afternoon to New York, to meet with about four investors interested in relocating operations in the country. The president did not provide the name of the companies or any more information. Alvarado also announced that during his visit to The Big Apple, he will receive a prize given by an international organization. The president also did not specify the type of award or the name of the organization. It is expected that during this morning of today, the press department of the Presidential House will issue a statement regarding Alvarado's trip to the United States. ------------------------ What another international award could Costa Rica receive?
