to Time magazine his decarbonization plan

Costa Rica staff President Carlos Alvarado traveled to New York Thursday to receive an award as one of the world’s most influential people, according to Time magazine, at the TIME Next 100 Summit gala. Alvarado was interviewed by the editor of TIME magazine, Justin Worland, where he explained the reasons why he continues working on his decarbonization plan 2050. "How can a relatively small country help switch the climate change narrative," Worland asked. According to Alvarado, the country has been consistent in environmental sustainability, in human rights, in democracy and in clean energy. "It has been an effort of many people, and we have been determined in taking it through a National Decarbonization Plan that sets a goal to be zero emissions in 2050." According to Alvarado, working for climate change brings benefits such as generating innovation, and generating new jobs. "I think it is a message altogether to bring countries forward, no matter the size but to address this important transformation that the planet needs," he said. According to Alvarado, the country has a legacy of several generations of having built a model of electricity generation from clean energy. "My generation is responsible for taking that legacy to another level, generating clean electric mobility, like trains and electric vehicles." Time magazine named Alvarado as one of the 100 most influential people this year Nov. 13. The current issue includes the TIME 100 list that spotlights 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health and more, the magazine said. The segment on Alvarado was written by Ban Ki-moon, former secretary-general of the United Nations and the deputy chairman of the Elders, a group of global leaders advocating for peace, justice and human rights. According to Ban, Costa Rica is a small country, but its president has shown great ambition in tackling the climate crisis. “He recognizes the need to confront this existential challenge with innovative and urgent action,” said Ban. “This year, the U.N. recognized Costa Rica’s trailblazing approach and ambitious climate policies with its highest environmental honor, naming it a U.N. Champion of the Earth.” Since becoming president in 2018, Alvarado has established a bold path for Costa Rica, setting targets to reform transport, energy, waste and land use, said Ban about Alvarado, adding that he is building on his nation’s rich legacy of sustainable development and environmentally mindful growth. “In an age of populism, isolationism and polarized politics, President Alvarado’s defense of the multilateral system and his commitment to finding global solutions to global challenges are highly commendable,” said Ban. “His actions serve to remind the world that even small nations can take the lead.” ------------------------ Is president Alvarado on the right track to reach his zero-emissions plan?
