more international trips
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff President Carlos Alvarado will leave the country today for Uruguay and then to Spain as part of his agenda of international activities. According to his press team, Alvarado travels to Uruguay in response to an invitation from President Tabaré Vázquez. On that trip, the first activity in which he will participate in Montevideo will be the presentation of a floral offering to the hero José Gervasio Artigas, considered the most important figure in the independence process of that country. Then both presidents will meet to talk about "fostering regional integration based on democratic values and human rights," said Presidential House in its statement. "There will be a meeting with the official delegations that will discuss the progress of the 2017-2019 Cooperation Program between Uruguay and Costa Rica." Friday, Alvarado will visit the National Research and Innovation Agency, "to learn about the good practices that the Uruguayan government is promoting in the productive transformation within the framework of the Fourth Industrial Revolution," said the president's press office. Saturday Alvarado will travel to Spain to participate in the inauguration of the COP25 summit, which will take place Monday in Madrid. According to the Presidential House, Alvarado will give a speech on the PreCOP, which was held in Costa Rica in October. In addition, Alvarado will attend the Climate Vulnerability Forum that will also take place in Spain. According to the Presidential House, on the trip to Uruguay, Alvarado travels with Manuel Ventura, minister of Foreign Affairs. On the trip to Spain, Alvarado will travel with Lorena Aguilar, the vice-chancellor. Alvarado plans to return to the country Tuesday. Some of the previous president Alvarado trips were: In November, Alvarado traveled to New York to receive an award as one of the world’s most influential people, according to Time magazine, at the TIME Next 100 Summit gala. Alvarado was interviewed by the editor of TIME magazine, Justin Worland, where he explained the reasons why he continues working on his decarbonization plan 2050. In October Alvarado traveled to Mexico to meet Monday with President Andrés Manuel López-Obrador. According to information provided by the government, among the issues being analyzed between the two presidents was the immigration crisis in the region. In September Alvarado traveled to New York to be part of the United Nations General Assembly. He also received the 2019 Champions of the Earth award, in the category of political leadership for his National Decarbonization Plan 2018-2050. On the eve of his speech at the 74th General Assembly of the United Nations, Alvarado along with the First Lady, Claudia Dobles visited the site of the recreation of the rain forest from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute being held at Brookfield Place in New York, U.S. Also in September, Alvarado made his third trip to Panamá this year, where he met with President Laurentino Cortizo, to speak on issues related to immigration, security, and trade, among others. In June, Alvarado had to cancel another trip to Panamá as part of the presidential act of welcoming the newly-elected president. This trip was canceled during a time of protests by the public employee unions of the Ministry of Education and truck transporters. Also in June president traveled to El Salvador to attend on the inauguration of the new Salvadorian president, Nayib Bukele. In May Alvarado traveled to Germany to meet President Frank Walter Steinmeier and also to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel. The goal of his trip was to expand cooperation between the two countries. In February, Alvarado traveled to Panamá to meet with the former president of the country, Juan Carlos Varela. In January, Alvarado traveled to Panamá to participate in a Catholic Youth event held with Pope Francis. ------------------------ Where else should President Alvarado travel?
