President Alvarado
and his entourage are in New York
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff President Carlos Alvarado is in New York this week, along with several representatives of the Government, to attend the General Assembly of the United Nations. President Alvarado is in the big block with the first lady, Claudia Dobles, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel Ventura and the Minister of Environment and Energy, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez. On Friday, the country received a 2019 Champions of the Earth award, from the UN for its role in the protection of nature and its policies to combat climate change. On Sunday, the president, together with Christiana Figueres, former Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Scientist Johan Rockstrom, was part of the 'Securing our future: people, food, and nature to resolve the emergency of the planet' forum. As was moderator M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International. The heads of state of Austria, Norway, the United Kingdom, Rwanda, Fiji, Seychelles, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo also participated in this same forum. Today President Alvarado will present himself as the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony of the “Climate Week NYC”. He will talk about the actions his government has taken to face climate change and the implementation of his National Decarbonization Plan. He will also speak at the “Climate Summit", convened by the UN Secretary-General, on concrete and viable plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent in the next ten years and to zero in 2050. Next Wednesday, President Alvarado will give a speech at the 74th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). The president will attend the launch of the advertising campaign, Only The Essentials, of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, which will take place in Manhattan. During his trip to New York, Alvarado will meet with representatives from Korea, Japan, Spain, Estonia, Austria, New Zealand, Andorra, and Colombia. In addition, President Alvarado also has scheduled meetings with António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, and Angel Gurría of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The president and other authorities are scheduled to return to the country on Friday, September 27th. ------------------------ Is the government's plan to combat climate change realistic?
