Police enact Back to School plan
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Beginning today, police kick-off their Back to School operation, created to protect students during the school year.
Among the main actions of the plan are: street surveillance, support to parents (or student’s trustees) to advise on safety measures for students during their route to school and inspection of schools’ transportation services, which must comply with regulations and keep precautionary measures to avoid accidents.
Police officers recommend for parents to protect their students by cautioning for the following:
• Never send children walking to school alone.
• Teach children to never talk to strangers on their way to school.
• Parents never place the child or school name visible on the supplies or uniform, to prevent strangers from obtaining information about the child.
• Children must know how to call 9-1-1 in an emergency at school.
• If the child receives virtual classes, adults should supervise the tasks and activities of kids using the internet.
• Children must never accept gifts, prizes, or invitations from strangers.
• Parents should never post the child's name, or family private information, such as home address or phone numbers, on social media.

Due to the pandemic, this year students are starting a hybrid class plan, where they meet in-person and virtually.
The school staff will be in charge of making alternate schedules for the students balancing between in-person and virtual lessons.
This new system approved by the Ministry of Health will be monitored and continuously updated, depending on the development of the virus in the country. So, in case there is a high risk of contagion, students will go back to virtual lessons to avoid putting them at risk of getting infected.
Among the main changes for this year: students must keep a social distance of 1.8 meters, constant hand-washing and mandatory use of a face mask.
If someone is detected or suspected of being infected with covid-19, the school must close until a deep cleaning of all the facilities is completed, according to the authorities. The re-entrance to in-person lessons will be gradual beginning the first two weeks of the school year by requiring older students to attend classes, while the rest will continue with virtual lessons.
The ministry has launched a campaign on its social media about the sanitary guidelines that will be applied in schools. The campaign can be found
on the Ministry's YouTube
channel.
