By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The Professional Migration Police reported Tuesday the result of a special operation that led to the detention 51 Nicaraguans who allegedly entered the country illegally. The operation was with support of the Border Police.
According to the police report, the detainees are 30 men, 12 women and nine children. "All of them are in illegal immigration status in the country," said a police report.
These people were arrested while traveling by bus from the district of Los Chiles in the Province of Alajuela to the Province of San José.
According to the police report, the officers stopped the bus and asked the passengers for their identification. Then they proceeded to review the information in the online consultation systems. In that way, the officers said they found that the people had entered the country illegally.
"They entered the country evading immigration controls of the area," said the police in its report.
The 51 suspects were arrested and sent to the Directorate of Migration facilities in the area where they must wait for a judge to order either the process of extradition to Nicaragua or the process of political asylum.
"The migratory operations correspond to a police strategy, which has been carried out throughout the year," said Stephen Madden, director of the Professional Migration Police.
According to the Directorate of Migration, as the high season of flows of illegal immigrants approaches, the presence of police and security in border areas will be increased.
