Police detain 28 people with irregular immigration status

The Professional Immigration Police conducted a special patrol operation during the past week, known as the Sector Immigration Operation in San José*, where 28 migrants with irregular status were arrested.
"These Sector Immigration Operations are part of the actions carried out by the Professional Immigration Police to carry out the proper verification of all foreigners who are in national territory, foreigners who must comply with the provisions of the law," said Stephen Madden, Director of the Professional Immigration Police.
According to the Directorate of Immigration report, the special operation was done in the district Merced, in the place known as Tierra Colombia, or also as the Dominican Republic. In this place the officers asked passersby for their identification, "to verify the immigration status of foreigners who are in the area," said the police
The special operation consists of requesting the identification to foreigners who are in shops, nightclubs, bars, beauty salons, barbershops, and hostels in the area. "The police seek to identify foreign people with dangerous profiles and who represent a risk to public safety," said the Immigration Directorate in its statement.
According to the police report, 87 people were registered, including Nicaraguan, Colombian, Dominican, Salvadoran, Cuban, Chinese, Panamanian, and Costa Rican nationalities.
Of those people, 28 were found with irregular immigration status, two people with legal tourist status, two people with legal worker status, 33 people with legitimate residency cards, and ten people with refugee status.
The people who were found to be with irregular immigrant status were detained and taken to the cells of the Immigration Police Department, where the actions in each case will be evaluated.
In addition to the verification of immigration status, the police verified that the persons investigated did not have criminal records such as human trafficking, drug dealers, or robbery, among others.
Officials of the Ministry of Social Security and agents of the Judicial Investigation Agency also participated in the Sector Immigration Operation.
