The Border Police have reported the arrest of 26 people as suspects of Human Trafficking this year.

According to the police report, the two most recent cases happened near the border with Panama.

The first case occurred near the community of La Gamba, in the Guaycará District, Golfito Canton in Puntarenas Province, when the police were carrying out a routine road control operation.

The officers ordered a driver to stop to verify his documents, as part of the road control. Inside the vehicle were four people, all of Cuban nationality, who allegedly had entered the country undocumented, according to the police.

The driver, a Costa Rican man surnamed Chavarría, was arrested and taken to the Golfito Prosecutor's Office, where the prosecutor on duty ordered the man to pre-trial jail for the alleged crime of Human Trafficking. Then, the Cuban nationals were taken to the Migration cells where they must wait for the extradition process or the option to follow asylum requests.

The second case took place in Chacarita District in Osa Canton also in Puntarenas Province. Similar to the previous case, the police stopped a driver as part of a routine road control operation.

The car was driven by a Costa Rican surnamed Acuña, who was also transporting four people of Cuban nationality who allegedly had entered the country skipping legal border checks posts, police said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Osa Prosecutor's Office. The Cuban nationals were also taken to the Migration cells where they must wait for the process of being extradited or being accepted by the asylum laws granted by the country.
