By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Internet access for rural communities is on its way, according to an agreement between the Rural Development Institute and the Rural Electrification Cooperative. According to the institute, to carry out the construction of the infrastructure they budgeted approximately $859,700. The funding is provided by both organizations. It is estimated that 1,310 houses will have access to the internet through the installation of fiber optic cables across 31 miles (about 50 kilometers) in five rural communities in Alajuela Province. That infrastructure will also be used to provide electricity to remote communities located in Peñas Blancas and Cerro Alegre de Chachagua in San Ramón. The towns included are Unión de Monterrey in San Carlos, as well as La Victoria, La Españolita, Ramón Brenes and Los Lagos, these in Río Cuarto Canton.  In April, the institute signed a similar agreement with the company Coopesantos to improve the infrastructure that allows access to telecommunications in rural areas. The Coopesantos company provides electricity, internet, cable and telephone services to rural areas in the southern zone of San José Province. According to the institute, their budget of $1,858,106 will cover costs for high technology equipment and installation to provide better internet service to places that historically have had a lack of internet access. The budget comes from the company and the institute. It is estimated that better internet access will be provided to 11,300 people from the follwing rural communities: • Cantons of Dota, Tarrazú and León Cortés in the southern zone of San José Province. • Cantons of Cartago Centro, Oreamuno, El Guarco and La Unión in Cartago Province. • Cantons of Acosta, Desamparados and Aserrí in the southern-east zone of San José Province. • Cantons of Puriscal, Mora, Santa Ana, Aserrí, Alajuelita, Escazú in the southern-west zone of San José Province. The project, expected to be implemented this year, seeks to cover 683 miles (approximately 1,100 kilometers) of those territories. ------------------ Where else should authorities provide internet service?
