A cataract-removal surgery campaign begins with 250 patients living in the cantons of Liberia, Cañas, Upala, La Cruz, Abangares and Bagaces, in Guanacaste Province, Social Security said.

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye that leads to a decrease in vision. According to Social Security, these programmed surgeries are taking place at the Eye Clinic located in San José Province. It is estimated that all these operations could be completed in three months.

The plan is to have patients transported in the Social Security bus in groups of 10 people. "During the trip, all protection measures are applied to prevent the spread of covid-19," Social Security said.

Among the requirements to opt for this benefit are: being a member of Social Security, being fully- vaccinated with covid-19, and having good health.

The staff of the Enrique Baltodano Briceño hospital, located in Liberia Canton, is in charge of contacting the patients who are on the waiting list for this surgery and coordinating their transportation to San José. After the operation, patients will continue with their check-up appointments at the Guanacaste hospital.

This strategy of transferring surgeries to San José has the goal to reduce waiting lists for this type of illness. Currently, at the Guanacaste hospital, doctors continue doing cataract removal surgeries for people who already have an appointment, Social Security said.

Despite the covi-19 pandemic, Social Security has continued to gradually provide medical services.
