$16 million in pipelines donated by China
more than 20 percent complete

President Carlos Alvarado has visited the construction of the new pipelines for citizens of Cañas* and Bebedero* in the province of Guanacaste.
According to the government, the progress of the works is 22 percent and the deadline for completing the pipeline is 18 months.
Construction began in April with the donation of $16 million from China. The work is done in coordination with the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers.
The project will use water from the Sandillal reservoir, which belongs to the Costa Rican Electrical Institute, thanks to a new treatment plant, a pumping station and the installation of new pipes.
The goal is to increase access to drinking water for 27,000 people living in Cañas, Palmira, San Miguel, Bebedero and Porozal. All these in the province of Guanacaste.
These areas had been affected by arsenic in the water. As a temporary solution, the Water Institute installed chemical cleaning and removal plants. However, a larger pipeline project was necessary to solve the problem. The arsenic is naturally occurring.
The Government of China has contracted with China Urban Construction Research Institute and China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group. "It is expected that these companies, contracted by the Chinese Government, will complete the project in a year and a half, where 40 Costa Ricans and 38 Chinese are working," said the government in its statement.
