Social Security calls for bosses to insure maids
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Román Macaya-Hayes, executive president of Social Security, has called on employers to insure the maids within the system. Special insurance for maids was created in 2017 to provide medical coverage for this type of domestic workers.
With the previous system, the minimum wage allowed was $485 per month full time. The system did not accept wages less than that, even if the maid worked part-time.
With the new system, the minimum salary allowed to report is $245.
According to Social Security, the average monthly increase of the special maid insurance is only 15 percent.
In April, of the total number of people enrolled in social security, 36 percent are men, and 64 percent women. Also, of the same period, the 91 percent are of Costa Rican and 9 percent of other nationalities.
The advantages for maids with medical insurance include medical service, the right to disability benefits and sick and maternity leave and the right to a pension.
More information on the process of insuring a domestic employee is available in Spanish from Social Security at phones (506) 2539-0000.
