La Fortuna Community Band needs donations to compete in the United States By the A.M. Costa Rica staff To present folk music and dances, 110 children from the community of La Fortuna in San Carlos* will travel Aug. 7, to the United States to represent Costa Rica in the International Sound Sport Competition of Drum Corps International, which will take place in Aug. from 8 to12, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Drum Corps International says its competition is is the most important band's event in the world. Sound Sport is an event the international music festival, showing musicians of any age, in an environment of competition and high-level performance. La Fortuna Community Band will be competing in the marching band category, as well as the DrumLine battle where the percussion team will face the best bands. "Competing in this event is the result of years of effort and dedication of these children and young people with a passion for music and the discipline necessary to reach this world-class competition," said Erick Quesada, director of the band. "This challenge represents an opportunity to continue growing.” This is not the first time the band has performed outside the country. In 2017, the band won first place in the Drum Corps Latin America competition in Guatemala. The competition of the La Fortuna Community Band in the United States this year was declared by the Ministry of Culture as being of cultural interest for the country due to the contribution of Costa Rican music and identity in an international event. Sunday the La Fortuna Band with the support of 19 bands from other communities will give a show at La Fortuna Roundhouse in San Carlos to raise funds to cover the trip expenses. The entry fee is a symbolic donation of ¢1,000 (about $2). People who cannot go to the show and still wants to donate a thousand colons to help the young musicians with the expenses of the trip to the United States can donate at the bank account of La Fortuna Community Band Association number 15117020020003042 in the Banco Nacional de Costa Rica.
