Harlem Globetrotters show this weekend supports mentally ill children By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The legendary Harlem Globetrotters plan three performances this weekend as part of their Fan-Powered World Tour. Just in case any reader does not know, the Harlem Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team. They combine athleticism, theater, and comedy in their style of play. Over the years, they have played more than 26,000 exhibition games in 123 countries and territories. As A.M. Costa Rica reported May 24, in Costa Rica, the athletes will offer three shows at the Oxigeno Playground Mall* in Heredia. The first show is Saturday at 4 p.m.. The second also is Saturday at 8 p.m. The third is Sunday at 8 p.m. More information on tickets, parking, and facilities can be found via the Oxigeno Mall site here* The show lasts an hour and a half and is recommended for all audiences. It not only focuses on the sporting aspect, but the athletes also interact with spectators in a humorous way. With the main stage, these basketball stars will delight all their fans, offering a new show, but with the characteristic and unmistakable ingredients of their traditional show, said Gustavo Segura, general manager of Oxigeno. The Globetrotters will face their traditional opponents, the Washington Generals. The goal of this tour is not to win games but to entertain the audience. Costa Rica is part of the Globetrotters world tour at the United States, England, Spain, Serbia, and Romania. The Globetrotters originated on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, in the 1920s, where all the original players were raised. In 1985 the first female player, Olympic gold medalist Lynette Woodard, was signed. Now the team counts four coaches and 59 players (seven women and 52 men). In June the Globetrotters announced the creation of the Harlem Globetrotters Fund at Nationwide Children's Hospital in the United States. The Harlem Globetrotters reported the team will support Nationwide Children’s Hospital with various initiatives to raise awareness and break the stigma of pediatric mental illness. The hospital is in Columbus, Ohio. Harlem Globetrotters stars will wear special edition shooting sleeves to call attention to the ”On Our Sleeves” movement, which is offering support to families in the U.S with children with mental health issues. The shooting sleeves will also be sold at games and online with a portion of the proceeds going to a special Harlem Globetrotters Fund to support the initiative. “We are both humbled and excited to be part of the On Our Sleeves movement in support of the one in five children in the U.S. living with a mental illness,” said Howard Smith, president of the Harlem Globetrotters. “For more than 90 years, the Harlem Globetrotters have been ambassadors of goodwill and we look forward to advocating for this important initiative together with Nationwide Children’s Hospital.” More information about the Globetrotter can be reached at them web link*. ---------------------------- Have you ever seen the Globetrotters?
