President Alvarado
meets with Ministry
of Public Education union
leaders

President Carlos Alvarado met
Tuesday at Presidential House in Zapote*,
with representatives of the
union of employees of the
Ministry of Public Education,
looking for "dialogue and
achieve agreements with the goal
of maintaining social peace and
progress for the country," he
said.
As a mediator, the priest Edwin
Aguiluz, a representative of the
Catholic Church. will be in
meetings to seek agreements to
end the strikes organized by the
union and the truck drivers.
"Our duty is to maintain peace,
order, and respect for the law.
We have managed to restore free
transit throughout the country,”
said Alvarado. "We are not going
to let the blockages affect the
families, the production, the
tranquility of the Costa Ricans
or the economic development of
Costa Rica."

In addition to the dismissal of
Minister Aguilar, the trade
unionists have a list of demands
as conditions to end the strike.
Among these are:
- A moratorium of 18 months
before applying the value-added
tax.
- Defense of Christian values in
educational programs.
- Resolution of the requests of
the truck drivers.
- Elimination of the moratorium
that affects fishermen.
- Resolution of the claims of
farmers in relation to land
ownership and rural
infrastructure problems.
- Cancellation of the bill that
would regulate the strikes of
public employees that directly
affect the unions.
- Cancellation of the bill that
would regulate employment in the
public sector that directly
affects the members of the
unions.
- Prohibiting the privatization
of the Costa Rican Electricity
Institute.
- Declaring illegal the new
company in charge of handling
the container port in Limón, APM
Terminal.
- Giving more economic resources
to the old state-run port
administration, known as
JAPDEVA, which was in charge
before the arrival of APM
Terminal.
- Cancellation of the dual
education project proposal.
- Modifying the end-of-course
test for students known as FARO
With respect to the information
classified as false that
originated the student strike,
such as the dual education
project, the unisex bathrooms in
schools and the new
end-of-course tests for students
known as FARO, the president
called for the citizens of to be
informed through official and
serious media of communication
to avoid taking decisions based
on false information. "Fake news
has real consequences in our
society," said Alvarado.
It is expected that the
Government ops expected to
announce in a few hours if an
agreement was reached with the
unions to finish the strike.
