The
United States government
invests almost $700,000
in scholarship for Costa
Ricans

The U.S. Embassy announced the
names of 32 Costa Rican who will
be beneficiaries of a
scholarship to study in the
United States, which represents
an investment of $690,000 by the
U.S. government.
The study periods vary from two
weeks to two years in careers
such as environmental
engineering, human rights,
cinematography, English
teaching, and translation.
"The academic exchange programs
are the bridge that promotes the
exchange of knowledge between
our countries," said Sharon Day,
ambassador of U.S. in Costa
Rica. "Through this bridge,
people come together and
education transcends geography,
language, and culture, and we
believe in their potential to
make a difference and have a
positive impact on their
communities."
The programs in which the
students were chosen are:
1. Fulbright: This program
allows graduate students of a
professional career to study and
conduct research in the United
States for a period of two
years. The four students
Fulbright scholarships winners
are:
- Alonso Alegre Bravo, who will
study to obtain a Ph.D. in
environmental engineering with
an emphasis in energy at Cornell
University, Ithaca, New York.
- Daniela Araya, who will study
to obtain a master's degree in
human rights at Columbia
University, New York City.
- Nicole Chi, master of film and
media production, who will study
at the University of Texas at
Austin.
- Scarlette Fenella Rivera,
master in teaching English to
speakers of other languages, who
will study at American
University, Washington, D.C.
2. Another Fulbright program is
for university professors and
researchers, with a duration of
two years. The three
scholarships winners are:
- Fabián Fallas Moya, Ph.D. in
computer science with an
emphasis on intelligent systems
and machine learning, who will
study at the University of
Tennessee, based in Knoxville.
- Lucía Ureña Rodríguez, Ph.D.
in design of learning and
technology, who study at Purdue
University, West Lafayette,
Indiana.
- Mariana Valverde Vargas,
master's degree in
interpretation and translation
studies, who study at Wake
Forest University, based in
Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The other study programs for the
rest of the students have a
period of six weeks or less.
These programs are:
- A Fulbright Special program
for teachers where they observe
how the lessons are taught in
the United States. They also can
teach and share their experience
with their American colleagues
in U.S. high schools.
- A program that allows emerging
leaders to study a semester in a
college or university in the
United States.
- Intensive short-term academic
programs whose purpose is to
provide a better understanding
of the United States to student
leaders who have not yet
graduated. It consists of
discussion seminars, lectures
and group presentations.
- A science, technology,
engineering and mathematics
program that incorporates
conferences and seminars with
scientists from the United
States.
- A program designed to
strengthen the leadership of
young Latin Americans, which is
administered by the Georgetown
University in Washington and the
Acción Joven Foundation in Costa
Rica. In January a group of 10
students from Pérez Zeledón
traveled to the United States to
participate in this program.
