The German Bio-economy Council
will support the government in
the execution of the national
Bio-economy strategy, said the
Ministry of Science.
The United Nations Environment
Program says that bio-economy,
known also as Green Economy, is
defined as an economy that aims
at reducing environmental risks
and ecological scarcities, and
that aims for sustainable
development without degrading
the environment. It is closely
related to ecological economics
but has a more politically
applied focus.
Minister Luis Adrián Salazar,
met in Berlin this Monday with
Joachim Von Braun, Beate
El-Chichakli and Christine Lang,
members of that German council,
an independent organization
advising the German government.
"At the meeting, it was possible
to agree on the support of
Germany in the review and
strengthening of our proposed
country by specialized
professionals," said Minister
Salazar.
The goal of the bio-economy is
the protection, use, and
conservation of natural
resources based on science,
innovation, and technology.
One of the main interests of
Costa Rica in this area is to
develop an artificial
intelligence project, using the
Internet of Things and Big Data,
for the benefit of agriculture
and the environment.
"The issue of using technologies
for agriculture, livestock,
fisheries, and environmental
conservation are essential
elements to have a digital but
sustainable economy," said
Salazar. "Certainly this
progress leads us to walk in the
technological development
coupled with the development of
the most productive sectors of
our economy."
Also announced is that the
German government invited Costa
Rica to participate in the
Global Bio-economy 2020 Summit,
to be held in Berlin, to present
the scientific efforts being
made in our country in this
area.
According to the Ministry, the
bio-economy is in accordance
with the President Alvarado
National De-carbonization Plan
(2018-2050).
"The bio-economy allows us to
take advantage of digital
technologies to minimize
environmental impact and
maximize efficiency for
de-carbonization and
productivity," said the Ministry
in its statement.
