A U.S.
citizen and Portuguese are
Rip Curl GromSearch 2019
champions

The Surf Federation announced
that U.S. citizen Caitlin
Simmers and Portuguese citizen
Afonso Antunes are the winners
of the Rip Curl GromSearch 2019
for youngers under 16 years,
which took place in Hermosa Beach*
in Puntarenas.
"With waves up to 6 feet high,
great shape and texture faced by
the surfers," said the
Federation on its statement.
"The first winner was the
promise of world surfing,
Caitlin Simmers, who, at only 13
years old, is the double
champion of this event in which
she can compete for three more
seasons".
Simmers competed and won over
the best Costa Rican
representation, Valeria Ojeda
from Jaco Beach, who obtained
9.5 points, against the 17.00
points of the U.S. champion
defending her title.
"I want to thank all those who
make this event possible, I love
Costa Rica, its waves and its
people for being so special,"
said Simmers.
A heat later was the turn for
Afonso Antunes who competed
against another U.S. citizen
Taro Watanabe, who was among the
favorites for a title.
Antunes achieved a combination
in the final came to 14.03
points versus 10.83 of Watanabe
who limited himself to running
two waves in the final (of 12
possible options).
"I worked very hard for this
moment. Winning this event is
one of the dreams of any boy of
my age and doing it in waves
like this country, it seems even
more special," said Antunes.
In addition, Costa Rica was in
first place in the Tag Team that
was held in the afternoon.
The final results of the
championship were:
In men, Afonso Antunes of
Portugal with the first place,
Taro Watanabe of U.S. with the
second place, and Sam Reidy of
Costa Rica with the third place.
In women: Caitlin Simmers from
the U.S. with the first place,
Valeria Ojeda from Costa Rica
with the second place and
Juliette Lacome from France with
the third place.
In Tag Team competitions, Costa
Rica in first place, the second
place for the European team and
the third place for the Pacific
group.
With those scores the 20th
edition of the Championship was
closed.
The competition was first held
in 1999 in Bells Beach,
Melbourne, Australia.
