Costa
Rica assumes presidency and
pro-tem secretariat
of the Marine Corridor of the
Eastern Tropical Pacific

Environment Minister Carlos
Manuel Rodríguez, received the
presidency and the pro tempore
secretariat of the Marine
Corridor of Conservation of the
Tropical East Pacific, CMAR,
from the Minister of Environment
of Ecuador, Marcelo Mata. The
offices run for the next three
years.
The ceremony took place at the
end of the session of the
governing council of the
organization and with the
presence of President Carlos
Alvarado.
This transfer is part of the
mechanisms established to give
continuity to the San José
Declaration of April 2, 2004,
which recognizes that the region
between the Cocos*, Galapagos*,
Malpelo*,
Gorgona*,
and Coiba*
islands is one of the most
important areas for the
protection, conservation, and
management of the biodiversity
of the Tropical East Pacific
region.
The birth of the CMAR, in 2004
with the signing in Costa Rica
of the San José Declaration,
constituted an innovative
platform for coordination and
management of the seas between
Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and
Costa Rica.
"Today, 15 years later, we are
again temporary chairs of CMAR.
Now with many lessons learned
and new challenges to ensure the
sustainability of our seas,"
said Minister Rodríguez. “Of the
Corridor depending 3.5 million
people with economic activities
like fishing and tourism."
According to Rodriguez, Costa
Rica will promote a regional
agenda where marine planning
processes, monitoring, and
surveillance mechanisms can be
carried out using the best
available technology.
For his part, Ecuador's
environment minister, Marcelo
Mata, said that during the three
years of his administration he
made important progress in the
process with the United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP).
The new plan was carried out
thanks to the financing of the
PACIFICO Foundation.
Ministers Mata and Rodríguez,
along with other authorities met
on Tuesday in San José where
they analyzed the current state
of the ecological processes, the
conservation of the biodiversity
and the connectivity of the
ecosystems present in the region
of the Biological Corridor.
CMAR is made up of a delegate
from the Ministry of the
Environment of each of the four
member countries and by a
technical secretariat in charge
of executing the actions that
are defined for the integral
management of the region.
