The Ministry of Public Works and
Transport announced the
construction of two overpasses
on the highway to the province
of Cartago*,
at a cost of $65 million, which
will be financed with a loan
from the Inter-American
Development Bank.
Project designs were approved as
of May 2018 but no progress had
been made due to lack of
funding. "When I was informed
that the designs were approved
in May 2018, I immediately
considered that it should be an
objective of this government and
the Ministry to seek the
resources to make this project a
reality," said President Carlos
Alvarado, “I thought it
would take us more time, but
fortunately we achieved it in
less than a year ".
This project was designed by the
consortium IDOM Consulting,
Engineering, Architecture,
S.A.U. & DEHC Ingenieros
Consultores S.A. hired and
supervised by the Transportation
Infrastructure Program of the
Ministry of Transport.
A period of three months has
been opened for the receipt
of receive offers from
companies interested in building
the highways. The deadline is
June 11.
The overpasses will be built in
the community of Taras* and
in the community of .
According to Rodolfo Méndez,
Minister of Transport, there
will be two high passes, with
six lanes of traffic in the case
of Taras* and
four lanes in Lima*,
which will have two more for
transit to and from the
community known as El Guarco*.
According to the Ministry, this
new infrastructure will solve
the problem of traffic jams in
the province of Cartago.
"In addition to giving a
solution in those crossings and
on the road between both points,
but to generate conditions of
comfort and safety for all
people," said Méndez.

According to the
project, the
overpass in the
city of Taras* will have 3 lanes in each direction, 3.3
meters wide,
sidewalks 2
meters wide.
This
construction
will allow high
fluid traffic on
the Florencio
del Castillo
road and will
have a second
passage with a
roundabout at
the San Nicolás
de Cartago
sector.
The overpass in
the city
of Lima* will have four lanes, two in each direction to
leave Cartago.
In addition, two
elevated lanes,
one in each
direction, will
maintain the
continuous
movement on the
South American
Highway.
The union
between the two
overpasses,
between La Lima* and Taras*, is a road of about 2.8 km.
The project
contemplates
improvements in
the 6 existing
lanes,
improvements in
the surface of
the ring and its
base, as well as
important works
in the accesses
to the marginal
streets and
investment in
sidewalks.
Also considered
are shared bike
lines with
sidewalks with
widths of 3.2
meters, thinking
about the
commercial,
industrial and
other
characteristics
that are
combined in this
section.
According to the
Ministry, around
40,000 vehicles
pass through
this area per
day.
