The Chiquita International Company
announced the closing its operations
branch in Limón*,
due to the opening of operations of
APM Terminals.
According to the company, the
operations department in Limón is no
longer necessary because the new
international APM Terminal Company
has the concession for maritime
services in the port of Limón.
The company clarified the decision
to its employees with the following
statement made by Esteban Otarola,
Operation Manager:
"On March 1, entered the operations
of Moín Container Terminal under a
concession granted by the government
of Costa Rica to the APM Terminals
Company. This concession requires
the exclusive operation of the
container vessels of this terminal,
which will provide an integral
service to the containers. As result
of these changes imposed by the
government, in this new integral
model of port operation provided by
the TCM, the company ( referring to
Chiquita) is obliged to the total
closure of the Department of Port
Inspections located in Limón on
Monday, March 4."
Chiquita Brands International is a
global company dedicated to the
production and marketing of bananas
and salads.
Its parent company is located in
Charlotte, North Carolina and has
operations in 70 countries and
approximately 20 thousand employees
on six continents.
Chiquita's operations in Costa Rica
cover the activities involved in the
banana and pineapple supply chain
from production to maritime
transportation to markets, both from
its own farms and from associated
producers.
The company's facilities are located
in the province of Limón and the San Carlos*
area, with administrative
headquarters in Guapiles*, and
the regional office for Latin
America in San José*.
Additionally, there is a
manufacturing operation for
value-added products based on fruits
located in Guácimo, Limón.

Chiquita's

With the
closing of Chiquita
operations department,
it becomes the third
company that has
closed operations in
Limón because of the
agreement with the
company APM Terminals.
The other companies
that closed their port
operations departments
were Dole on January
24 and Standard Fruit
on January 28.
With regard to the
closure of these
companies, the
Ministry of Labor
confirmed that it is
carrying out support
work for the Standard
Fruit Company's
employees.
At the close of the
edition, the
government has not
referred to the
closure of Chiquita.
