Plenty of options to celebrate the 4th of July

The 243rd celebration of the U.S. Independence Day started Wednesday, at 11:30 a.m at the National Monument in San José*, when Sharon Day U.S. ambassador, paid tribute nu placing a floral offering at the foot of the statue.

The U.S. Embassy located will be closed in observance of U.S. Independence Day.

Later at 3 p.m. the U. S. Air Force band, Airmen of Note, gave a concert in the Civic Center for Peace in Desamparados*, San José. The rhythm of jazz and the mix of international music by the 11 members of the group delighted the public.

As A.M. Costa Rica reported Friday, the main event for U.S. citizens in Costa Rica is the American Colony Committee celebration of Independence Day later today.

During the 1950s, the U.S. Embassy has hosted a 4th of July picnic at the ambassador's residence. Later the committee took over.

The committee has invited the public to this year’s Independence Day celebration. It will be held on in the covered Plaza AE101 by Crate&Barrel, in
Avenida Escazú* in San José.

There will be activities for children and adults, DJ Borris music, a Mustang 65 rock concert, 4th of July Flag ceremony, performances by Airmen of Note, the Coffee Pickin Square Dancers, the North American Cultural Center Jazz Orchestra and an antique car parade, then all will end with fireworks. The celebration from 3 to 7 p.m. will be open for the public with no entrance fee. More information is available at 8369-7992.

For expats who cannot reach the celebration at Avenida Escazú, there are more options for today:

Los Sueños Beach Club Marina* in Herradura Beach starts a party 4:30 p.m. with live music, a special American menu, and a fireworks show at 7 p.m. It also will be open to the public. More information at 2630-4050.

Marina Pez Vela* in Quepos plans a Fourth of July celebration starting at 3 p.m. with live music, hot dogs, chili, apple pie and finishing at 11 p.m. with fireworks. More information at 2774-9000.

Kaffee Baden Biergarten*, on Avenue 16th and 2nd Street in San Isidro de El General, at the south mountains zone of San José starts its celebration at 11 a.m. with live music and an American menu by Chef Memo. More information at 2771-1185.

- Sailing Center*, near Bahia del Sol in Potrero, Guanacaste, starting a celebration at noon with DJ music, a cornhole tournament, pinky guaro, games, food, and fireworks. More information at 2654-4300.

- The Garden Bar* in Hotel Puerta del Sol in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste begins with live music at 6 p.m with the Rock Dealers Band. Planned are beer buckets and fishbowls. More information at 2670-0195.

- Zi Lounge* in Coco, Guanacaste has scheduled live music with Will Matthews and Los Vaqueros band with an American food menu and fireworks starting at 10 p.m. More information at 8888-3939 or 2670-1978.

- Pelicanos Hotel* at Esterillos Este plans an American BBQ and live music with James E.P, starting at 2 p.m. More information at 2778-8105.

- The 4th of July annual softball game* is at Brasilito in Guanacaste next to Lucy's restaurant, starting at 1:30 p.m. with the first pitch at 2 p.m. Potrero is playing Tamarindo. Hot dogs or hamburger will be or sale. More information is on the softball game Facebook page here*

- Surf Club Bar & Grill*, 100 meters east of Supermercado Langosta or 100 meters north of the Barceló at Lorena, Guanacaste starts its celebration at 11 a.m. with an American food menu. There is a $10 admission for two persons. Teams will compete at Horseshoes, foosball, ping pong, darts and pool for gold, silver, and bronze medal prizes. More information at 2653-1886.

- Jacó Bar*, located across the street from Mas x Menos supermarket plans a celebration starting at 10 p.m. with live music with Lucho Calavera. More information at 2643-4080.

- Grand Casino Escazú, located 350 meters west of Multiplaza Escazú Mall, starts its celebration at 9:30 p.m. with an Independence show, live music and an American food menu. More information at 4055-0503.
