Fourth
of July parties in the city, beach
and mountain

The American Colony Committee
composed of U.S. Expats and Costa
Rican friends announced the
celebration of Independence Day of
the United States of America on
Thursday, July 4.
Since the late 1950s, the U.S.
Embassy has hosted a 4th of July
picnic at the Ambassador's
residence.
In 1961 Jack Fendell, a local
businessman, gathered a group of
U.S. citizens to organize the
event and the American Colony
Committee was born.
The U.S .Ambassador has generously
continued to open the residency
grounds for this patriotic event
since 2002.
When the committee was searching
for a new space, the Florida Ice
and Farm Co. offered their
employee recreational area for the
picnic. The event continues to
include traditional games for
children and adults, band music,
square dancing, hot dogs, drinks,
and an appearance by Uncle Sam.
The focal point of the event has
always been the "official
ceremony." This includes the Costa
Rican and U.S. national anthems, a
flag raising by U.S. Marines, the
Pledge of Allegiance, a welcome
from the American Colony
Committee, and a few words from
the U.S. Ambassador. The average
attendance at the Picnic has been
between 2,000 to 3,000 adults and
children.
Since 2017, the American Colony
Committee has teamed up with
Avenue Escazú to put a new face on
the celebration of Independence
Day. The inspiration for this "new
face" was the famous Boston Pops
4th of July concert.
The American Colony Committee,
invites the public to this year’s
Independence Day celebration. It
will be held on Thursday, July 4,
in the covered Plaza AE101 by
Create & Barrel, in Avenida Escazú*
in San Jose.
There will be activities for
children and adults, DJ Borris
music, a Mustang 65 rock concert,
4th of July Flag Ceremony,
performances by "Airmen of Note"
from The United States Air Force
Band, the Coffee Pickin 'Square
Dancers, the North American
Cultural Center Jazz Orchestra,
antique car parade, and all will
end with fireworks. The
celebration from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
will be open for the public, no
entrance fee. More information at

If you like a party on the beach,
these are the best options:

Beach Club Marina*, in
Herradura Beach in Puntarenas, the
party will be same Thursday,
starting at 4:30 pm with live
music, special American menu,
fireworks show at 7:00 p.m. It
will be also open to the public.

in Quepos, Puntarenas. The Fourth
of July celebration starts at 3:00
with live music, hot dogs, chili,
apple pie. Finishing at 11 p.m.

countryside, there is the option
to go to Kaffee Baden
Biergarten*, on Avenue 16th
Street 2nd in San Isidro del
General, at the south mountains
zone of San José. Starting at 11
a.m. with live music, American
