promotes Costa Rica
in British ‘The Eden Project’

"The Eden Project" is a
conservation project that houses
the largest indoor natural rain
forest in the world in the city of
Cornwall in the United Kingdom.
The Tourism Institute promoted
Costa Rica with an exhibition of
orchids this weekend, as well as
cultural and gastronomic
activities. It is the first time
that The Eden Project has made an
alliance with a country.
"In the city of Cornwall, England
there has been an ambitious
conservation project for more than
fifteen years, which recreates the
ideal environment to house the
world's largest natural rain
forest under the roof," said the
Institute in its statement.
The alliance with Costa Rica
includes, starting in May, a
temporary exhibition of Costa
Rican orchids, as well as the
presence with information on the
website, platforms and other
channels of The Eden Project with
information on the country's
efforts as a sustainable
destination and this weekend the
event "Costa Rica Festival" was
developed with a series of
cultural activities, to attract
tourists from the United Kingdom.
According to Ireth Rodríguez, head
of promotion of the Institute,
"this alliance with The Eden
Project arose because this project
shares the same values as respect
for the environment and the
philosophy of sustainability, also
because it allows us to have an
approach with our objective in the
United Kingdom, which are the
families with high income that
take their children to this place
and that is also sensitive to the
preservation of nature and
possibly this will boost the
interest to visit Costa Rica in
their next holidays."
The Institute reports that they
have been recognized worldwide for
these efforts in protecting the
environment. For example, in 2018
the country generated 99 percent
of its electricity from renewable
resources, the country has five
percent of the planet's
biodiversity and a quarter of the
territory is protected in national
parks and conservation areas.
The company Eden Project
International Ltd, developer of
The Eden Project, has carried out
joint works with the Matambú Reserve*
located in the Nicoya Peninsula.
This reserve makes notable efforts
in the regeneration of secondary
forests and has shared knowledge
in the areas of ecological
restoration, learning and research
and other scientific areas with
this British project.
"Costa Rica has long been a
recognized leader in ecotourism
and has been present in the global
environmental agenda and we are
delighted to work as partners with
this project," said David Harland,
director of Eden Project
International.
The alliance between the Institute
and The Eden Project will be
extended for six months until the
beginning of October and it is
expected to continue until next
year with the development of more
joint actions for the promotion of
Costa Rica as a tourist
destination
The Institute's statistics show
that in 2018 there were more than
74,000 tourists from the United
Kingdom, and an average of more
than 6 thousand per month.

There were one million tourists
from Europe in 2018.
On March 13, as A.M. Costa Rica
reported, the Institute reported
that directors of seven airlines
showed positive results in recent
months as a result of flights from
Europe to Costa Rica.
María Amalia Revelo, Minister of
Tourism, said, "in 2006 Costa Rica
only had an indirect flight to
Europe; at present there are eight
airlines that offer flights
between the old world and Costa
Rica, seven of them directly and
one with a stop, which is evidence
of the great leap that has taken
our country as a result of its
strategy of attracting airlines."
Minister Revelo, who personally
attended meetings with
representatives of Lufthansa, KLM,
Air France, Edelweiss and Condor,
confirmed that Costa Rica is one
of the destinations that generate
the best results for these
companies in the region, and they
intend to continue growing in the
near future.
"Undoubtedly the existence of
direct flights Europe-Costa Rica
encourages domestic companies to
seek more opportunities to attract
tourists to the country," said
Hermes Navarro, director of
Investment Attraction of the
institute.
According to statistics from the
Ministry of Tourism, by air in
2018 there were 414,722 arrivals
of Europeans to Costa Rica, the
majority coming from Germany, the
United Kingdom, France, and Spain.
This figure is 7.6 percent higher
than in 2017.
In January 2019 there were 248,754
tourists who arrived by air an
increase of 9.2 percent in
relation to the same month of
2018.
Of the total of tourists, 45,643
passengers arrived from Europe,
and that is 4.2 percent more than
in January 2018.
According to the Ministry, the
Costa Rican tourist model is based
on small and medium enterprises
with 94 percent of the tourist
accommodations having less than 40
rooms.
