Government
builds new highway in
Guanacaste with $300
million in loans from
Inter-American Bank

The Government continues of
construction of the new
highway between the towns of Limonal*
and Cañas*,
in the province of Guanacaste,
for the sum of $300 million
financed with a loan of the
Inter-American Development
Bank.
According to the Ministry of
Public Works, the construction
started in September 2018 and
is scheduled to be completed
in 2020.
"We are constantly monitoring
the project so that everything
is done according to the
studies and designs, complying
with the guidelines and
specifications proposed in the
scope," said Tomás Figueroa,
director of the project. "To
be able to start these
constructions we had to clean
60 percent of the road."
This month, works began on the
construction of 79 sewers,
three of the seven new bridges
and the 20.8 kilometers of
road between the towns of
Limonal and Cañas.
This project is part of one of
the three stages of the
four-lane construction in the
70-km route between the towns
of Barranca and Cañas.
The Azvi Company, in charge of
this road, will begin the
construction of new four lane
bridges over the Desjarretado,
Javillos, and San Miguel
Rivers this month.
Later, it will advance with
new bridges over three more
rivers, the Lajas, Higuerón,
and Salitral.
The old bridges will be
demolished after the
construction of the new ones
so they do not cause traffic
problems.
In order to carry out the
entire new highway, the
government must execute 158
expropriations. At present, 57
owners have agreed to a
voluntary possession release.
The new highway will have an
overpass at the intersection
of National Routes #1 and #18,
between the Inter-American
Highway and the road to the La Amistad
Bridge*, over the
Tempisque River. The highway
will also have two overpasses
near the towns of Cañas and La
Gotera.
There will also be five return
routes, 8 pedestrian bridges,
18 steps for wild animals, and
areas for bus parking, among
other improvements.
Another viaduct construction
is in the current
Social Guarantees traffic
circle in Zapote*,
as A.M. Costa Rica
reported, it is being
financed with a loan of
$17.6 million from the
Central American Bank for
Economic Integration.
According
to the Ministry of
Transport, the
construction of the
new viaduct is
advancing according to
plan. The construction
of the piles presents
an advance of 22
percent. They are also
with the work of
placement of piping,
which will allow
building the lanes of
the viaduct.
The viaduct will have
a length of 864
meters, with an
overpass of 550
meters, six lanes,
three in each
direction (upper step)
and in the lower lane
four lanes, two in
each direction along
500 meters in length.
According to the
Ministry's work plan,
construction is
scheduled to be
completed in January
2020. It will require
approximately 120
workers. For this
project, the Office of
the United Nations of
Projects and Services
is the executing
agency and the company
MECO will be in charge
of the construction.
Traffic officials are
maintaining a detour around
the road, so drivers are asked
to take precautions to avoid
driving in the area.
