At the Costa Rican Art Museum on
Sunday, President Carlos Alvarado
presented his plan to de-carbonize
the country by the year 2050. That
means that during the next 31 years
the country will reduce emissions of
greenhouse gases to zero.
As a response to President
Alvarado's plan, former vice
president of the United States and
Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Al
Gore, gave his congratulations
saying, "decarbonizing the global
economy to drastically reduce the
pollution of global warming is
absolutely essential to ensure that
our civilization can survive and
thrive, and that is one of the
reasons why I am so excited to see
that Costa Rica continues its role
as leader world to help solve the
climate crisis with the rapid
deployment of the strategic plan to
completely decarbonize its economy.
Congratulations Costa Rica!, because
you are showing the rest of the
world that it is definitely possible
to make the transition to a low
carbon economy today. Keep going
with this great work. Their efforts
give me and many others a lot of
hope that we not only can, but we
will also be able to solve the
climate crisis. Thank you."
Additionally, the Inter-American
Development Bank announced a
donation of nearly $ 3.5 million to
Costa Rica for the creation of a
Compensation Mechanism for Ecosystem
Services (known as MCSE).
Witnesses of the signing of the
donation were President Carlos
Alvarado and Environment Minister
Carlos Manuel Rodríguez.
According to the government, this
donation will help improve
conservation and sustainable use of
biodiversity.
Fidel Jaramillo, representative of
the Inter-American Development Bank
in Costa Rica said, "Costa Rica was
already a pioneer in the payment for
environmental services modality and
an example in Latin America in the
recovery of forested areas."
With this donation, property owners
would be compensated for maintaining
properties located in vital areas to
protect the environment.
The administration of this donation
will be in the charge of the Banco
Ambiental Foundation (FUNBAM) and
will benefit the National System of
Conservation Areas (SINAC).
One of the key components of this
project is the adequate maintenance
of the watersheds - of particular
importance given the time of drought
and water scarcity that the country
is going through - as well as a
territorial planning framework for
Costa Rica which incorporates the
ecosystems and the protection of
biodiversity.

reported on Jan. 24, President
Carlos Alvarado met with
Al Gore, former vice president
of the United States and
spokesman on climate change,
during his work meetings at the
World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland.
The president was able to
discuss the de-carbonization
challenges of Costa Rica and the
challenges of democracy in the
region with Mr. Gore.

the meeting took
place at the end of
the first day of
President Alvarado's
participation in the
Globalization 4.0
Forum: Forming a
global architecture
in the era of the
Fourth Industrial
Revolution.
According to the
Presidential House,
President Alvarado’s
visit was in
response to the
invitation of
Professor Klaus
Schwab, founder and
executive president
of the World
Economic Forum.
Since its inception,
the WEF has become
the world's most
important platform
for public and
private cooperation.
It involves
business, political,
intellectual and
social leaders from
all over the world
who, because they
are committed to
improving the
planet, seek to
influence
industrial, regional
and global agendas.
Since founding the
Forum in 1971,
Schwab has moved to
promote the
worldwide concept
that the management
of a modern company
should serve not
only the
shareholders, but
all the parties
involved and thus
achieve long-term
growth and
prosperity.
President Alvarado
also took the
opportunity to
remind world leaders
of the
competitiveness that
Costa Rica has
achieved in the
international
context and the
country's determined
commitment to the
OECD membership
process.
