Communal Band will participate in London's New
Year's Day Parade 2021
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Orotina Communal Band*, from the province of Alajuela, announced their participation in London's New Year's Day Parade 2021. According to the organizers of the parade, eight thousand artists from different parts of the world will participate in the celebration of the new year. An audience of more than 500,000 spectators are expected to attend, plus 600 million spectators around the world. On Friday the 13th, in the community park, there will be an official ceremony led by Robert Bone, the director of the event. The Orotina Band was founded in 1990. Currently, it is composed of 220 young members, including musicians and folk dancers.  Related to community bands preforming in the U.S., as A.M. Costa Rica reported on August, the Fortuna Community Band from San Carlos*, won first place in the Sound-sport International 2019 international competition held in Indianapolis, IN in the U.S. The Sound-sport is one of the most prestigious competitions for bands in the world. "The Costa Rican band, made up of 110 members delighted those present with beautiful folk costumes," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its statement. The Consul of Costa Rica in the U.S., José David Murillo, said the event had a large number of attendees, including the Costa Rican community in the city of Indianapolis. This was not the first time the band has performed outside the country. In 2017, the group won first place in the Drum Corps Latin America competition in Guatemala. The competition of the Fortuna Community Band in the United States was declared by the Ministry of Culture as being of cultural interest for the country due to the contribution of Costa Rican music in an international event. The members of the band were raising funds to cover the trip expenses. Thanks to the donations they received, they entered the contest and won first place.  On January, the Municipal Band of Zarcero*, in the province of Alajuela, was invited to participate in the Rose Parade in 2020. The band is made up of 250 members between 7 and 35 years old. The parade route is 9.5 kilometers, and the band will play a repertoire of 100 percent traditional or folk music. The band opened the "$1 for the Municipal Band of Zarcero" campaign to pay for expenses. People who want to help should go to www.bmzarcero.com to see the donation options. Costa Rican bands have participated in the Rose Parade twice.
