Ben Lyster-Binns is Her Majesty’s ambassador-designate to Costa Rica and non-resident ambassador to Nicaragua, announced the U.K. Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

According to the British government statement, Lyster joined the Diplomatic Service in 1989 and has carried out a variety of roles in London, most recently as Head of the Joint FCO-DFID Somalia Unit.

"His previous overseas postings were to Uruguay, where he served as Ambassador from 2012 to 2016 and Lisbon, where he was Deputy Head of Mission," the Foreign & Commonwealth Office  said in its statement.

The new ambassador Lyster-Binns has also served in Lilongwe (Malawi) as Aid and Development Secretary and in Muscat (Oman) as Political, Press and Public Affairs Officer.

"Ben is married with three children,” the Public Affairs Office said.

The Ambassador represents Her Majesty The Queen and the UK government in both countries. Lyster-Binns is responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations and consular services.

The new Ambassador Ben Lyster-Binns is expected to arrive in the country soon, said the British Embassy in Costa Rica.

Lyster-Binns takes command of the embassy after the departure of the former ambassador Ross Patrick Denny.

Last month, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered a tribute to the former ambassador Denny, at the end of his term as representative of the British government in the country.

According to the ministry, the farewell ceremony was held in the Golden Room of where the minister Rodolfo Solano Quirós thanked Ambassador Denny for contributing to the strengthening of bilateral bonds, cooperation, economic and cultural exchanges between both countries.

Denny has been the UK's ambassador since October 2015.

Costa Rica, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland have had diplomatic relations since 1848 when the country recently became independent from the Federal Republic of Central America. The president of that time José María Castro Madriz began diplomatic relations for the recognition of Costa Rica from European countries.
