New guidelines to tourist
sites due to coronavirus

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute called on the tourism industry to increase hygienic measures due to the confirmation of patients infected with covid-19 coronavirus.

Sunday the Ministry of Health reported nine positive cases of infected coronavirus covid-19 plus 34 people classified as suspected of being infected.

The institute has issued the so-called General Guidelines for Owners and Administrators of Tourist Services due to Coronavirus Covid-19.

“The country has taken the information on the worldwide development of the coronavirus virus seriously and created guidelines that include public and private health services, international airports, tourist services, schools, high schools, places of massive public concentration, among others,” said the tourism officials in the statement.

The guidelines are published in Spanish, on the website of the Ministry of Health, following the guidelines of the World Health Organization.

According to Maria Amalia Revelo, minister of Tourism and also president of the Tourism Institute, the tourism sector must assume the responsibility of caring for tourists and  providing them with the necessary information for the prevention of virus, even when 80% of the reported cases of coronavirus worldwide are asymptomatic or with the symptoms of a common flu.

The main recommendations to the tourism sector are:

- Define a person in the company to be responsible for keeping the staff updated with the information published by the Ministry of Health regarding the coronavirus.

- Have a plan for quick attention to anyone who presents the symptoms, whether employee or tourist.

- Constant cleaning of restrooms.

- Free access to soap and water for the public for frequent hand washing.

- Placing signs in visible places with the preventive measures of hand washing and the correct way to sneeze or cough.

- Staff must be alert to detect people with fever or respiratory illness.

- When detecting people with possible virus infection, those in charge should keep the sick person separated from close contact with other people.

- Keep workplaces ventilated.

- Have identified the short route to the nearest clinic or hospital for the prompt transfer of the person with symptoms of coronavirus.

-In the case of hotels, rooms must be made available exclusively for patient care, in this case a sufferer person must stay in isolation.

According to the most current information from the World Health Organization Sunday night, 111,464 coronavirus cases have been reported around the world, and 3,883 patients died.

In China, where the virus was first detected, 80,739 cases were confirmed, and 3,120 patients died.

The mayor number of cases of death outside of China are 366 in Italy, 237 in Iran, 53 in S. Korea, 22 in the U.S., 19 in France, 25 in Spain, seven in the Diamond Princess cruise liner also in Japan, six in Iraq, three in the Netherlands as well as Hong Kong, two in the U.K. and also Switzerland. One patient died in Thailand, Egypt, Taiwan, San Marino, Argentina and the Philippines.

World Health reported 105 countries had patients infected with coronavirus covid-19. In the America continent cases were confirmed in Canada, the U.S., Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia and Paraguay.
