New colones bills to release this month

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

This month, they will begin the circulation of new colones bills, announced the Central Bank of Costa Rica.

According to the bank, since December 2017 they had begun the process of creating the new bills made with polymer, which is a compound similar to plastic, but recyclable. "The polymer substrate gives the bills more durability, makes them safer, and allows proper recycling of waste once it reaches its useful life," the bank said.

This month the bills of ₡20,000 will be released, after the banks complete the calibration of its devices to recognize the new bills.

The bank plans to put those of ₡2,000 and ₡5,000 on the market in December. And the new ones with a value of ₡1,000 and ₡10,000 from 2021.

The new bills, in addition to maintaining folkloric designs, have adjustments in their form to include security measures to verify their authenticity and combat counterfeiting, such as holograms, transparencies and patterns.

Once put into circulation, the new bills will coincide for a certain period with the current one until the bank informs on the date on which the old bills can be exchanged due to none value.

It is expected that in a reasonable period of time, people will be allowed to go to banks to exchange old bills for new ones, before their value expires.
